Madame Bovary is a novel by Gustave Flaubert, written in 1865
It tells the story of Emma, a farmer's daughter, who marries a calm and reliable country doctor at a young
age. After a while she is tired of her boring marriage and dull country life. Disillusioned, she yearns for the
romance and adventures she used to read in her favorite books. She plunges into extravagant affairs and
lives beyond her means in luxury. But she fails to find the happiness she seeks. Her desire for illusions
leads to debt and the ruin of her husband's career. Ultimately, she commits suicide.

From Anna’s Facebook:
So grateful for the beautiful presentation of Madame Bovary, her story in Music, together with tenor Léon
van Liere, in the stunning Mirror Hall of the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The event was hosted by
Ivo Niehe, with author Adriaan van Dis sharing his insights on the novel Madame Bovary.
Léon and I sang our hearts out! It truly felt like a fairytale!

MADAME BOVARY tells the story of Emma, who is at the end of her rope. Not only is she completely
broke, but she is also mentally paralyzed. She sees only salvation in a bottle containing a green powder:
arsenic. A long and painful death in which she relives images of her life while her body deteriorates. Her
marriage to Dr. Charles Bovary. Her dreams of a life like the rich: full of opera performances and balls. The
constant rebellion against the provincial existence in which she becomes increasingly trapped. Her escape
into extramarital affairs with Leo and Rodolphe, the escape into possessions she can't afford until
everything finally becomes too much for her.
